Starbucks has introduced an AI-powered inventory system that is already in use across more than 11,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada, with plans to roll it out worldwide. The aim of this initiative is to replace time-consuming and error-prone manual inventory checks with an intelligent, automated system.

Employees use tablets to scan shelves in both sales areas and storage rooms. Using computer vision and augmented reality technologies, the AI automatically detects which products are located where and in what quantity. The collected data is synchronized with the central system in real time.

Technological Background

• The software is based on machine learning algorithms trained to recognize thousands of product packages from different angles.

• The system was developed with the support of the company Nomad Go.

• Additionally, 3D spatial recognition and environmental sensors are used to better analyze product placement and availability.
